Stella Nieland
STELLA NIELAND died May 30th at Weinberg Village Assisted Living in Pittsburgh. She would have had her 101st birthday in two weeks. She was the daughter of Ezra G. and Jennie Manheim and the sister of the late Minnie (Martin) Rugg. Stella, a native Philadelphian, was the devoted wife for 70 years of the late Mischa Nieland whom she met when they were both members of the chorus of the Philadelphia Grand Opera Company. Mischa, a cellist, went on to a distinguished career with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, ten years with the National Symphony where he was Assistant Principal Cellist, and 45 years with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Stella was an editorial assistant at Harvard Medical School for 20 years. Stella’s survivors include her son Michael (Lilli) Nieland, M.D., and grandchildren Jennie, Nathaniel, and Ariel. Services and interment private. The family wishes to express its gratitude for Stella’s care in the last year to the staff of Weinberg Village and Sivitz Jewish Hospice.
