Solomon (Sol) Levin
Solomon (Sol) Levin, 89 died February 27, 2011 from complications of Pneumonia. Born June 8, 1921, to Ray and Rabbi Morris A. Levin of Adath Jeshurun Synagogue. He was the beloved husband for 67 years of the former Ruth Glass, son -in-law of the late Herman and Jennie Glass, father of Roy (Helen) and Leslie (Freddy) Brotsky, grandfather of Rachel (Patrick) Prock, Lance (Sonni) Levin, Allison (Keefe) Bernstein, and David. Great grandfather of Ryan, Julian, Calvin, Charlie, Lawson, and Lake. Uncle to Paul Levin (Ann). He was preceded in death by his brothers Jack and Harry Levin, sister Libbie Braverman, Dr. Aaron Landy, and sister Beatrice Stein. He was a merchant, teacher, coach and mentor. Being the son of an Orthodox Rabbi, Sol lived his life to help others. He owned and operated the Wm Penn Pipe Shops from the mid ‘50’s until 1984. During WWII he instructed hundreds of Midshipmen in survival swimming. For 18 years he ran a Monday night basketball program at Peabody H.S. for the Y-IKC. Dozens of youths learned life’s lessons from Sol that led them to successful and often professional careers. He was active in his Synagogue and went to services several times a week to help make a Minyan. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Jewish Sports Hall of Fame for basketball at Pitt and Glenville State Teacher’s College, as well as his stellar baseball career while in the U.S. Navy. He also coached and played basketball for many years at the YM&WHA. Despite five hip replacements later in life, Sol played tennis and worked out daily at Club One until 3 months prior to his death. Sol has touched so many lives and his memory will live on forever. Deepest thanks to Dr. Isaac Levari, and the entire staff at Cedars Community Hospice of Monroeville.
