Shirley Meyers Bilder
BILDER: On Wednesday, April 26, 2017, Shirley Meyers Bilder, age 97, died at home, surrounded by her children, who loved her dearly. A lifelong Pittsburgher, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Herman and Sophia Meyers and the devoted wife of the late Dr. Milton “Mickey” Bilder. She was the beloved mother of Betty Ann “Annie” Bilder, Marc Bilder (fiancée Shizue Konno), and Sabina (Peter) Rosenfeld. She was the proud and doting grandmother of Sophia Rosenfeld, and loving sister of late Louis Meyers. She cherished her many nieces, nephews and cousins. After receiving her bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago, Shirley was awarded a master’s degree in social work from the University of Pittsburgh. Although it was not fashionable at the time, she chose to work. For 25 years she served as a medical social worker for the state of Pennsylvania. She had a remarkable ability to make and maintain friendships with people she met throughout her life. Incredibly thoughtful, she unfailingly commemorated the milestones of those who were dear to her with a card, note, clipping and/or gift. She quietly performed good deeds with a listening ear and open heart. Extremely generous, it was almost impossible to leave her home without receiving at least a loaf of banana bread or something else she wanted you to have. She had a great sense of humor, could remember and tell jokes, and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. She loved shopping for antiques, finding bargains, knitting and doing crafts. She remained sharp her entire life, avidly followed current events and reading The New Yorker. She could remember amazing details about people and places, past and present. She was devoted to her parents and raised children who were devoted to her. Following her own strong sense of right and wrong, she lived a long and good life, sharing and caring for others throughout it. She enriched the lives of many, as they did hers. Services were held at Ralph Schugar Chapel, Inc. Interment private.
