Temple Sinai invites the community to learn the Hebrew alphabet, vowels and basic vocabulary of Jewish life at a new beginning Hebrew course taught by Rabbi Keren Gorban. Classes will take place at Temple Sinai on Wednesdays, July 6, 13, 20, 27, Aug. 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The cost for community members is $36 and includes the book “Alef Isn’t Tough.”  Call 412-421-9715 for more information and to register. 

The Squirrel Hill Historical Society will hold its next free meeting on Tuesday, July 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Church of the Redeemer, 5700 Forbes Ave. Morry Sable, a member of the family that owned an auto dealership in Squirrel Hill, will speak on the topic “Auto Dealership & Service Stations in Squirrel Hill Over the Years.”

Chabad of Western Pennsylvania and its centers invite the community for An Evening of Inspiration, marking the 22nd yahrzeit of the passing of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson OB”M on Tuesday, July 12 at 7 p.m. at Congregation Beth Shalom. Guest lecturer Rabbi Yitzchak Schochet, of Mill Hill United Synagogue in London, will speak on the topic “The Challenge of the Jew in the 21st Century.”

The event will also included recognition of dedicated individuals from each Chabad Center with the Lamplighter Award.

Schochet serves on the Chief Rabbi’s Cabinet, is a columnist for Jewish News, and has published in the Times in London and Times Magazine International. He is frequently a panelist for the BBC’s “The Big Questions” series.

NCSY Garden Sizzler, an adults-only, all-you-can-eat barbecue, will be held on Wednesday, July 20 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. at the home of Danny and Nina Butler, 5710 Bartlett St. in Squirrel Hill.

Maccabi USA, a federally recognized not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, is recruiting Jewish Paralympics athletes to compete in the 20th Maccabiah Games taking place the summer of 2017 in Israel. The competitions are for cycling (male 18-40), swimming (male and female ages 18-40), table tennis (male 18-40) and tennis (male 18-40).
