Melva Reah (Bernstein) Hirschfield

HIRSCHFIELD: Melva Reah (Bernstein) Hirschfield, aged 90, daughter of the late Joseph (JB) Bernstein and Elizabeth Bernstein died peacefully on December 15, 2012 surrounded by family and her husband of nearly 70 years, Dean Hirschfield. Dean and Melva, married on Valentine’s Day 1943 shortly before he was called to serve in the Navy, had a rare and enduring love story. She was active in the wholesale jewelry industry from age 14 until her retirement at age 84. Melva was a founding member of Temple Emanuel in Mt. Lebanon, the community where she and Dean raised three children, Carol (Hirschfield) Goldberg (Theodore); James Hirschfield (Sonya Ishii); and Betty Jo Hirschfield Louik (Howard). In addition to her husband and three children, she is survived by seven grandchildren (John Goldberg (Veronica), David Goldberg, Elizabeth Goldberg (Michael Weisberg), Mie Hirschfield, Max Louik (Kate), Rachel Louik Smith (Jason) and Jay Louik) and five great grandchildren (Joseph Goldberg, Michelle Goldberg, Javier Goldberg, Sarah Goldberg and William Weisberg). Services were held at Temple Emanuel. Contributions may be made to Temple Emanuel, the Bernstein-Hirschfield Fund at the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh or a charity of your choice.
