Margarete Baum

BAUM, MARGARETE: On Wednesday, March 14, 2012; Beloved wife of the late Ludwig Baum. Beloved mother of Raymond N. (Harriet) Baum and Peter A. (Danielle) Baum. Sister of the late Lilo Boss. Grandmother of Erica (Hal) Coffey, Kevin (Alyson Eberhardt) Baum and Matthew and Emma Baum. Great grandmother of Zachary and Eli Coffey and Maxwell Baum. Aunt of Evelyne Glaser. For nearly ninety-nine years Margarete lived a rich and rewarding life. Margarete survived being born prematurely, life and hunger in Berlin during World War I while her father was a prisoner of war in France, the years of anarchy and economic chaos that followed the war and the N_____ oppression that came next. Emigrating to America in 1940, Margarete and Ludwig, her husband of fifty-five years, built a new life from scratch. After starting her family Margarete devoted her life to her family and friends and to a wide array of volunteer pursuits. Her work ranged from a multi-decade stint as treasurer of her sisterhood to teaching arts and crafts at the YMCA and JCC and for over twenty years helping first and second graders at East Hills Elementary School learn how to read and enjoy books by making puppets, reading and acting out the stories. She was always there for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. A memorial service was held in the Josiah & Carrie Cohen Chapel of Rodef Shalom Temple. Interment Private.
