Libby (Tenenhaus) Stern
STERN: On Wednesday, March 13, 2013, Libby (Tenenhaus) Stern; Beloved wife of the late Mark Stern. Loving mother of J. Victor (Edna) Stern and Theodore (Pamela) Stern. Grandmother of Aliza, Raquel, Ariela and Ethan Stern. Libby was born in Suceava, the provincial capital of Moldava in Romania, the only child of Moke and Tema Tenenhaus. In 1943, at age 16 she was deported with her parents to the labor camps of Transnistria. When typhus ravaged the camps, she walked out alone to freedom. Her knowledge of seven languages and the actions of righteous gentiles helped her survive her trek across Europe where she met her future husband, Mark Stern, and married him in the Displaced Persons camp in Italy, eventually immigrating to the US to live in Brooklyn, where they raised two sons in a Jewish household. She worked as an accountant in New York City, and later on in Pittsburgh, where she and Mark moved so he could pursue his career as Executive Director of Beth Shalom. Libby loved to cook for her family, to sing, play bridge and scrabble, to visit Israel and observe Jewish traditions. Despite the many tragedies in her life, she always had a positive outlook and pride in her family. Graveside Services and Interment were held at Beth Shalom Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Sivitz Hospice, 200 JHF Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15217. Arrangements entrusted to Ralph Schugar Chapel, Inc. www.schugar.com.
