Temple Sinai not the first

In a recent edition of The Chronicle you told of the “new” dues policy being implemented at Temple Sinai (“Demolishing dues may foster future finances at Temple Sinai,” Feb. 24). At Parkway Jewish Center we turned to a similar policy almost 15 years ago. In fact, we were the first to do so in Western PA. We call our system of dues collection, “Dues, You Choose,” and it works just as it is stated.

We let our members decide how they will support our synagogue by asking for a financial commitment at the start of each year. We never turn anyone away. The financial commitments are kept in the highest confidentiality.

We are a small (75 families) conservative congregation located in Penn Hills though our members mostly come from Churchill and Monroeville. As small as we may be compared to the synagogues and temples of Pittsburgh, we still have a minyan each and every Friday evening and Saturday morning.

“Dues, You Choose” is alive and well in the Eastern suburbs.
