Letter to the editor September 17
Davis spectacle is a charade!
Throughout history, we have witnessed the evil that can be perpetrated by those who cloak themselves in religion in order to perpetrate injustice and evil.
The latest example is that of Rowan County, Ky., clerk and petty tyrant Kim Davis, who refuses to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples because it offends her religious sensibilities. Since when does one’s rights trump the duty to perform their job duties? Who has the right to absolute freedom when they enter the door of the workplace?
The honorable individual who finds gay marriage so repugnant would resign rather than to refuse to perform their job. It should be crystal clear that the person who bears responsibility for Kim Davis being in jail is Kim Davis.
The laughable facet of this charade is that the “moralist” is a three-time divorcee. What would her supporters have to say if some other civil servant denied Davis service on the basis that she has made a mockery of the institution of marriage? Would that not offend the religious sensibilities of many?
I find it chilling that Republican presidential primary election aspirants and U.S. Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee have sided with Davis, endorsing the anarchy of one individual shredding the Constitution and disregarding the authority of the Supreme Court. This issue is a litmus test for me. I would not consider voting for an individual whose theocratic views render them a danger to our democracy.
