Way to go, Allderdice!

As a displaced alum, I had the pleasure of following the Allderdice boys’ basketball team this season, culminating in being on hand for their championship game (“Allderdice: Always No. 1 in the hearts of its fans,” March 24). Although the team came up a bit short in the finals, a 28-2 season is remarkable. The arena was packed with students, alums and parents with a vocal and enthusiastic showing of community support. Congratulations to all for the once-in-a-lifetime season.

Buzzy Greenberg among the best

Unless I missed it somehow, I did not see any mention of my children’s grandfather, Bernard (Buzzy) Greenberg, in “Who’s the greatest? Best JCC basketball player still up in the air” (March 24). Surprisingly, many of those quoted in the story knew him very well. I think it is sad that such a well-known basketball player, who was one of the early “pioneers” for Jews participating in college and professional sports, should be forgotten.

He was a lifelong member of the JCC, played basketball for both Allderdice and Carnegie Tech and is in the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. You should refer to articles in the Pittsburgh Press and the Post Gazette: “Tech Basketball Star Makes Critics Eat Their Words” from Jan. 12, 1936 (yes, 1936!) and “Bernard Greenberg: Basketball Legend,” his 2005 obituary, among others.
