Holocaust Center announces winners of arts and writing contest

The Holocaust Center of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, in collaboration with JFilm The Pittsburgh Jewish Film Forum and the Partnership2Gether, a program of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh and the Jewish Agency for Israel, has announced the winners of the 2013 International Waldman Arts and Writing Competition.

The winners were named in the categories of Creative Writing (Poetry and Flash Fiction — works of 500 words or less), Short Film (10 minutes or less) and Scale Sculpture/Visual Arts.

This year, for the first time, the competition includes entrants from the Federation’s Partnership2Gether communities in Israel, Karmiel and Misgav.

The winners of the competition are:

Short Film:

Middle School:  1st Place:  Tayna Markel, Yeshiva Girls School; 2nd Place:  Jessica Hillard, SouthSide Area Middle School; High School:  1st Place:  Chana Esther Marcus and Hadas Einau, Yeshiva Girls School (High School).  Israeli winners are:  1st Place:  Ido Toueg; 2nd Place:  Dolev Ben Shirtit.

Visual Arts/Scale

Sculpture:

Middle School:  1st Place:  Eitan Perlin, Community Day; 2nd Place:  Sarah Grill, Community Day; Ilana Udler, Community Day; High School:  1st Place:  Katrina Papanastasiou, Springdale Jr./Sr. High School (High School); 2nd Place:  Ruth Oshlag, Mt. Lebanon High School; and 3rd Place:  Zahava Cohn, Yeshiva Girls School (High School).  Israeli winners are:  1st Place:  Shaked Gal; 2nd Place:  Inbar Winterman; 3rd Place:  Or Levin and Chen Nardi.

Creative Writing:

Middle  School:  1st Place:  Sarale Einav, Yeshiva Girls; 2nd Place:  Sydney Staatler, SouthSide Area Middle School; 3rd Place:  Kristen Greenawald, SouthSide Area Middle School;  High School:  1st Place:  Yitzchoh Lutsky, Yeshiva Boys School; 2nd Place:  Bayla Oster, Yeshiva Girls School; 3rd Place:  Alaina Pecora, Ligonier Valley High School.  Israeli winners are:  1st Place:  Lin Izenberg; 2nd Place:  Michael Geller; 3rd Place:  Shaked Gal.

A ceremonial awards brunch for all winners, including the three First Place winners from Israel, will be held, Sunday, April 7, at the Schenley Oval Ballroom. At that time, all of the winning entries, as well as visual arts-honorable mentions, will be auctioned off via a silent auction to help raise funds for Holocaust education. Voting for the People’s Choice winner can be done at  peopleschoiceaward.blogspot.com.
