Gertrude S. "Gerty" (Leitman) Newman
NEWMAN: On Wednesday, March 9, 2011, Gertrude S. “Gerty” (Leitman); Of Monroeville, formerly of Squirrel Hill, New York and Wilkinsburg passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at the age of 82. Daughter of the late Leo and Emmy (Landauer) Leiter of Germany and Pittsburgh, and she was a Holocaust survivor. Gerty won many accolades throughout her life including The American Legion Certificate of Distinguished Achievement Award in 1943 and several Certificates of Appreciation from the Veterans of Foreign Wars and for her work with Hadassah and her recent enthusiastic work with Symphony East, an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Symphony Society. She was preceded in death by her dear friend Irving Goldstein. Gerty is survived by many more loving friends who will miss her dearly. Services were held at Ralph Schugar Chapel, Inc. Interment West View Cemetery of Rodef Shalom Congregation.
