SUMMARY:Walk to Remember
DESCRIPTION:\nWalk to Remember\ndescription: On Sunday\, June 2\, Community Day School (CDS) will present the 3rd annual WALK TO REMEMBER. \nThis event invites members of the public to meet Holocaust survivors in our community and be inspired firsthand by their courage\, bravery\, and strength\, and hope. Participants walk the perimeter around CDS six times to memorialize the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust. The WALK TO REMEMBER will also honor the lives forever changed by and lost to anti-Semitism since the Holocaust in Pittsburgh\, Poway\, and worldwide. All proceeds will fund Holocaust education at CDS and youth-focused outreach across the Pittsburgh area. \n“I’ve witnessed the life-changing power of hearing a story directly from someone who has lived through the unthinkable\,” says Jacki Savage Gelernter\, WALK TO REMEMBER founder and the daughter-in-law of a Holocaust survivor. “I created WALK TO REMEMBER to share the survivors’ stories with anyone and everyone who might benefit from their experience and inspiration\, especially at this critical moment in our nation’s history.” \nWALK TO REMEMBER begins at the site of the Gary and Nancy Tuckfelt Keeping Tabs: A Holocaust Sculpture on the CDS campus at 6424 Forward Avenue in Squirrel Hill from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Keeping Tabs is a maze in the shape of the Star of David constructed of glass blocks that are filled with six million pop tabs collected and counted by CDS students\, each tab representing a human life lost in the Holocaust. \n The family-friendly event will include activities for children\, and light refreshments will be served. Registration is required\, and includes: a commemorative T-shirt\, meeting with Holocaust survivors\, and tours of the Keeping Tabs Sculpture.
