Community Day School Yom HaShoah Commemoration
description: Please join Community Day School Middle School for a Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) commemoration on Thursday, April 12 from 8:45-9:30 a.m.
The moving event, which is open to the community, will include student-led music, Hebrew prayer, lighting of remembrance candles by local Holocaust survivors and their families, as well as a flag-lowering ceremony. It will coincide with the annual commemoration of the Holocaust established by Congress and led by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
With inspiration from the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, the theme will be “The Power of Words,” focusing on the impact that words had in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides and how the words that we choose shape both our views and history.
Keynote speakers will be Rup Pokharel, who came to the United States as a refugee from Bhutan and is now the Service Coordinator for Jewish Family and Community Services in Pittsburgh, as well as Leslie Aizenman, Director of JFCS Refugee and Immigrant Services.
The event will be held at CDS at the site of the Gary and Nancy Tuckfelt Keeping Tabs: A Holocaust Sculpture at 6424 Forward Avenue, Squirrel Hill.
Call 412-521-1100, Ext. 3207 or email Jenny Jones at jjones@comday.org to reserve seating.
