Dr. Lowell Lubic
LUBIC: Dr. Lowell Lubic, 90, of Chadds Ford, Pa., died October 9, 2016, at home surrounded by family. Dr. Lubic was a prominent clinical neurologist with Montefiore Hospital and what is now UPMC. He was the first full-time neurologist in Pittsburgh and a full professor of neurology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. He received an Honorable Discharge from the military in 1945. His undergraduate work was in biology, after which he completed his medical training at the University of Pittsburgh. He did his residency at Columbia Presbyterian in New York and at Western Psychiatric Hospital in Pittsburgh. Dr. Lubic received his Board Certification in Neurology and then went into private practice with Dr. Yale David Koskoff, a highly regarded neurosurgeon. As a team, according to Dr. Koskoff’s wife, Betty, they made great strides in clinical diagnosis, surgery and post-operative patient care. Dr. Lubic was on the neurology team in Philadelphia that wrote and gave the Neurology Boards for Certification for eight years. He published many clinical studies, including a seminal study on lumbar puncture and brain tumors. Dr. Lubic worked closely with Toshiba Japan to evaluate their MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) diagnostic, and ultimately purchased one of the first MRIs for private practice. Dr. Lubic took great pride in educating medical students and residents who now practice neurology around the country. He was a golf and tennis enthusiast. In the mid-1970s, he was the team doctor for the World Team Tennis Freedoms and then, for four games, was the coach (the regular coach was ill). They won all four games. Dr. Lubic was also a Golden Panther. After retirement, Dr. Lubic relocated with his wife to Chadds Ford to be closer to his children and grandchildren. He volunteered as a consulting neurologist for eight years for Community Volunteers in Medicine. Dr. Lubic is survived by his wife, Janet Kimball Lubic; his daughters, Leslie Finkel (James) and Jennifer Poluka (Joseph); his grandchildren, Kelly Ritting, Adam and Samantha Poluka; and one great-granddaughter, Eirene Rittng.He is also survived by his brother, Robert Lubic (Benita).
