Dorothy Bernknopf
BERNKNOPF: Dorothy Bernknopf, longtime member of Beth El Congregation of the South Hills, passed away this month in Los Angeles, where she had been living in recent years. Along with her husband Arthur, who predeceased her some 30 years ago, she raised her family in Scott Township after moving to the community from New York City. Dorothy was a graduate of Hunter College in New York, taught kindergarten in the New York public schools and later worked as a substitute teacher and librarian in the Chartiers Valley School District for many years. She also volunteered in both Beth El’s preschool and library. Dorothy led the synagogue’s Hadassah group for many years and oversaw the group’s annual holiday wrapping fundraising drive at the local mall. Her family considers Dorothy to have been one of the world’s great crossword puzzle players. And rarely was a Steelers game played without her watching on TV, Terrible Towel in hand. Discussion of the world around us was a constant in her home and she instilled the values of education, respect and kindness in her family. Dorothy is survived by her sons David and Andrew and her beloved grandchildren Zachary, Sarah, Leo and Eva.
