The Agency for Jewish Learning will again offer an Israeli-style Hebrew ulpan this summer at 2740 Beechwood Blvd., Squirrel Hill. The ulpan, an intensive period of Hebrew language education, will consist of 19 hours of Hebrew in one week of study for adults and families in small classes. Five class levels, from beginner to advanced, will be offered. The classes will be held June 2, 3, 7, 8 and 10, from 6 to 9 p.m., and Sunday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Continuing summer Hebrew classes are available following the ulpan program. There is a charge for the classes, which also includes kosher refreshments and Israeli lunch on Sunday. Pittsburgh photographer Donald Robinson will hold an exhibition of his work titled “A Thousand Words,” from Friday, May 21, to Saturday, June 26, at the James Gallery, 413 South Main St., West End Village. An opening reception will be held Friday, May 21, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the James Gallery. Robinson, whose work has appeared in The Chronicle, has traveled the world shooting people places and subjects with rich color and an immense expression. The exhibition celebrates the centennial of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh. The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art contributed to the project. Retired Pittsburgh Steelers Rocky Bleier, Randy Grossman, John Banaszak and Craig Bingham will take the stage Sunday, May 23, 6 p.m., for the annual South Hills Sports Night at Beth El Congregation, 1900 Cochran Road, Scott Township. Sally Wiggin, a WTAE newscaster, will act as master of ceremonies. The Steelers will provide an inside look from their playing days, sharing their experiences and funny stories. They’ll also discuss what they’re doing now. The event will include a sports memorabilia auction with autographed items, ballpark food to set the mood, prizes and more. Holocaust survivor Sam Weinreb will be a guest speaker at Norwin Middle School’s fifth annual Holocaust Rembrance Night Monday, May 24, at 6 p.m. in North Huntingdon. A ceremony will commemorate its 6 million Jewish victims, followed by an open tour of a Holocaust museum. Four hundred students have collaborated for three weeks to create the museum, which is comprised of thirty large-scale exhibits that feature student poems, letters, research and artwork. The Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition will hold a public meeting on the master plan update Monday, May 24, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Jewish Community Center, Levinson Hall. The 1990 to 2010 master plan has helped maintain and enhance the quality of the neighborhood. The next set of projects, partnerships and initiatives to help guide Squirrel Hill for the next 10 to 20 years will be identified. The meeting will initiate a process to gain input on the master plan and viewpoints about the neighborhood where we live, work and play. Questions such as what do you like about the neighborhood, what should be improved and what changes would you like to see occur in the neighborhood will be explored. Jazz Workshop, Inc. Family Night presents Victor Provost (Steel Pan Performer) Wednesday May 26, 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Carnegie Library Homewood, 7101 Hamilton Ave. Born and raised in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Victor began his musical journey at 10 years of age. His interest in the steel drum began at St. John School of the Arts. His music includes Calypso, Reggae, Classical Soul, Blues. He also has been performing as a jazz artist for more than 10 years. He was the first steel pan player to be featured at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy, in 1999. Having performed across North America, Europe, and the Caribbean, he has toured with the 21st Century Band (featuring Ron Blake and Dion Parson) and the award-winning Real Silk Band and recorded with artist such as Roger Humprhries, James Johnson III, Dwayne Dolphin, Lafayette Harris Jr., Tim Adams and Ken Karsh.
