Anita K. Berkey
BERKEY: Anita K. Berkey, age 89 of Pittsburgh, passed away peacefully in her sleep March 27, 2015. She was predeceased by her husband, Sidney Berkey and her sister, Florence Rubin. Anita is survived by her three children, Linda Jordan of Pittsburgh, Scott Berkey (Linda Ruckert) of Pittsburgh and Stefani Berkey (Daniel Tandy) of Maine, along with her grandchildren Kyle Jordan, Trevor Tandy, Marisa Tandy, and her sister Janet (Lowell) Lubic of Philadelphia, brother-in-law Frank Rubin of Pittsburgh, along with several nieces and nephews. Anita was born, raised and spent her life in Pittsburgh. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor’s of science degree in education. She then went on years later to get her master’s degree in early childhood education from Point Park College. She spent many years as a substitute teacher and homemaker. Her children and grandchildren were her passion throughout her adult life. Anita loved to read and was an avid exerciser. Even before exercising was popular, Anita would take her kids for long walks. She also participated in aerobics and yoga classes several times a week for over 50 years. When Anita was in her 70s, she was the oldest person, by many years, in her spin and aerobics classes. As recently as five years ago, she was still working with a personal trainer. She spent as much time as possible outside in the warm summer sun. She passed on her appreciation of the sunshine, outdoors, and especially her love of flowers to her children and grandchildren. She was a kind, gentle, generous, person who shared a special lifelong bond with her sisters. Her kindness especially will be missed by her family and friends. Graveside services and interment were held at Homewood Cemetery, Star of David Section. Contributions in Anita’s memory may be made to Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, 1 Schenley Park, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.
