MUNDEL: Alvin S. Mundel, 86, a resident of Uniontown, Pennsylvania died peacefully on Saturday ,October 20, 2012, in Uniontown Hospital.He was born April 19, 1926, son of the late B.J. and Marie (Greenburg) Mundel. In addition to his parents, Alvin was preceded in death by his sisters Louise Mundel Kirshner and Elaine Mundel Abramson. Left to cherish his memory is his devoted and loving wife of 62 years Shirley K. Mundel and loving sons Mark Mundel and Randy Mundel and wife Elinor, grandsons whom he loved and adored, Alexander Mundel and Benjamin Mundel and his fiancé Elizabeth Epstein, all of whom he was so proud, as well as many wonderful friends and several nieces and nephews. Alvin graduated in 1944 from Uniontown High School and enjoyed serving on its Reunion Committee. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II from 1944 to 1946 in Italy and was proud to tell stories about his service to our Country. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Business Administration in 1949. Alvin was President of B.J. Mundel Furniture Company Uniontown, PA, Mundels Furniture and Appliance Outlet Uniontown, PA and Mundels Mattress Center, Inc. Belle Vernon, and remained active in the businesses until his death. He took an active role and was a devoted member of many local boards for both civic and business organizations including, but not limited to, the Fayette County Development Council (Past President), The Uniontown Redevelopment Authority (Chair for several years), First National Bank and Trust, Huntington Bank, Pennsylvania Economy League, Private Industry Council, Chairperson for many years of the Downtown Uniontown Business Part of the Chamber, Member of C Note II Investment Club, and the National Home Furnishings Associations. Alvin was member of several local Veterans organizations for over 60 years. He was an active member of the Fayette Area Chamber of Commerce for over 60 years, serving as President and Chair of many committees, and was named Citizen of The Year in 1988. Alvin proudly served on the Uniontown Hospital Board of Trustees for nearly three decades. He was Chairman of the Hospital Board for nine years and recently was selected to be a “Trustee Emeritus.” Alvin was also active with Fayette Home Care (Chairman of the Board) and other boards and organizations affiliated with the Hospital. Alvin was also a member and Treasurer for many decades of the Tree of Life Synagogue in Uniontown, the Uniontown Country Club and an over 50 year member of the Uniontown Kiwanis Club. Alvin had a commitment to make the Uniontown Area a strong and productive community. He was honored to call it home for over 86 years. Friends were received in the Donald R. Crawford Funeral Home, Hopwood, PA Monday Oct 22, 10 a.m. until Noon the hour of service in the Funeral Home with Rabbi Sion David officiating. Interment in Holy Society Cemetery, Hopwood, PA.
