Allan Meyer Hirshberg
Hirshberg: Age 91, died after a short illness, on Monday December 10, 2012, Allan Meyer Hirshberg. Allan is survived by his loving wife, Janet Waisbrot Hirshberg, his four children Sally Hirshberg, Ellen Hirshberg, Dr. Laurence Hirshberg and his wife Debbie, Ellen Clark, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Allan owned and operated a family hardware business, taught all his children to ski, played tennis and golf into his eighties, enjoyed time in retirement in the Laurel mountains, by the ocean, and traveling with his beloved wife Janet. Allan loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered by friends and family alike. Mr. Hirshberg served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy in World War II, commanding an LSM (R) rocketship involved in combat in the South Pacific. Lt. Hirshberg was awarded the Navy Cross “for extraordinary heroism as Commanding Officer of the USS LSM(R)-194 in action against the enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Okinawa…After a bomb laden suicide plane crashed into his ship, Lieutenant Hirshberg directed the entire damage control from the conn. Displaying exceptional courage when it became necessary to abandon ship, Lt. Hirshberg remained to supervise the continuous fire of his anti-aircraft batteries against further enemy air attacks. His outstanding courage and his inspiring leadership of the officers and men under his command, reflect the highest credit upon Lieutnenant Hirshberg and the United States Naval Service.” Services were held at Temple B’Nai Israel, White Oak. Interment Temple B’Nai Israel Cemetery.
